Masonry Challenges in The Annex Homes
The Annex’s historic and eclectic properties encounter specific masonry problems owing to their vintage and Toronto’s weather. A&A Masonry’s customized approaches secure your home’s allure and robustness.
Mortar erosion from freeze-thaw cycles
Toronto’s intense winters allow water to infiltrate mortar joints, freezing and leading to erosion that undermines stability. We renew joints using breathable, lime-based mortars, providing longevity and alignment with The Annex’s heritage look.
Spalling or cracked brick on older facades
Extended contact with humidity and thermal variations leads bricks to fracture or peel, lessening The Annex’s ornate facades. We substitute impaired bricks with exact replicas and add sealants to avert additional harm.
Staining and efflorescence from moisture exposure
Humidity may produce white efflorescence or blemishes on brick and stone, reducing your home’s vibrancy. We purify surfaces and set up drainage mechanisms like weeping tiles to uphold The Annex’s lively appearance.
Structural wear on chimneys and decorative stone features
The Annex’s elaborate chimneys and stone details endure erosion from elements, posing risks of unsteadiness. We bolster these elements with proficient repairs, employing era-suitable materials to sustain their structural wholeness.

What The Annex Clients Say
July 17, 2024
I live in a 97 year old brick house in Central Toronto. Having stripped the paint off the bricks on the back wall of the house, it was clear that the mortar had seen better days. I reached out to A&A. Nigel advised me that the bricks were in good shape, but the mortar on the back wall, the front porch pillar and a few other places would have to be ground out and replaced with new mortar. I agreed to proceed requesting a quick turnaround. Within two weeks, Tera came and did all the grinding in one day until quite late to make sure all the dust (and there was a lot of dust) was washed down. With some assistance from a colleague, Tera got the mortaring done in two additional days. I couldn't be happier with the result or the process. Tera did a great job. My brickwork is restored to it's original glory! Thanks Tera and all at A&A.

Brick Repointing

Kim, the sales person from A&A masonry, came out and gave us a quote. Restoration project was complicated but Kim was excellent in answering all of my questions and putting me at ease. Eduardo and his crew did a great job in restoring a 100 year old building. They removed all spalling bricks and bricks with efflorescence. They parged areas that required parging and replaced a limestone door sill, all within 4 days. The work was top quality and done to perfection. I would definitely hire Eduardo and his crew again! Thanks Eduardo for all your hard work and attention to detail.

Building Restoration

Found A&A Masonry on Homestars. Our 100 yr old house had spalling bricks. Greg came to our place shortly after calling for inspection and quote. We had Dwight come by and do the job and he did a great job. He was a champ and did a 12 hr day in the blistering heat (humidex in the 40s!) to complete the job in one day. The brick was matched very well, considering the original brick hasn't been made in years. and most of it had to be done around our gas line. Still, Dwight got it all done. He was very polite and professional and cleaned up afterwards, even after such a long day. He earned his pay and then some. We couldn't be happier with the job done and would absolutely recommend in a heartbeat. Give A&A a call if you have any masonry work needed. Ask for Dwight-and if you can, try and get him on a day when it's under 40 degrees out. Great work!
